What is Talking Heads Counselling?

Talking Heads Counselling is a confidential counselling service located in the Adelaide Hills (Stirling). The aim of each session is for you to feel heard and to develop strategies to manage negative emotions and responses.

How do I schedule an appointment?

You can book a session by selecting an appointment via Online Booking. You do not need a GP referral or a mental health care plan to access our services.

Will Medicare or my health insurance cover my appointment?

Medicare MHCP rebates are not offered, but our fees are in line with, or often less than, the gap payable by providers who do offer rebates. Private health fund rebates are available for participating funds - Bupa, Police Health Fund, Emergency Services Health, Phoenix Health, St Lukes Health, GMHBA and CUA Health (telehealth only), Teachers Union Health, AIA and Westfund.

Are you a Psychologist or Counsellor?

Whilst I have a degree in Psychology, I am not a registered Psychologist. However, I am a registered Counsellor (and Teacher) with years of experience - visit About to learn more.

What session length should I book?

It is preferable that you book a 60 minute appointment for your initial consult. When we first meet you will need to read and sign the consent agreement and discuss your mental health history - then we can get started on the actual counselling session itself!

What happens if I cancel?

Talking Heads Counselling is a privately owned small business and has a strict Cancellation / No-Show Policy that is enforced. Please see our Terms & Conditions for full cancellation details.

If the appointment is for my child, can I stay for the session and can I have updates?

Parents are welcome to stay for ten or so minutes of their child's first appointment. In order to establish rapport and build a therapeutic relationship, a 1:1 session is preferred as children are more likely to chat openly with less people in the room.

Parents are welcome to come back in towards the end of the session, if they wish to do so. This is often a useful time to discuss any relevant updates or strategies without compromising confidentiality.

Do I have to sign a consent agreement and does this mean everything is confidential?

You must sign a consent agreement. If you are under the age of 16 your parents/guardian will need to sign on your behalf. If you are over the age of 16 you are considered a mature minor and can sign the agreement independently if you have the capacity to do so.

Health professionals are legally required to keep what you say private unless this puts you or someone else at risk, or if obligated by law. The age by which you have automatic confidentiality rights is:

  • 16 and over in South Australia

If you are under the age of 16 your counselling sessions will still remain confidential except for the reasons outlined above. However, your parent/guardian may ask for updates or information - please see Services for more details.
